Patrick Zaki, motion for Italian citizenship: “I resist, thanks for the support”

Still in jail. From last week for another 45 days Patrick Zaki stay in a prison in Egypt. It has been happening for a year, since 7 February 2020 when he was arrested at the airport on his return to Cairo from Italy for a vacation. No international intervention has managed to change things, just as his lawyers have not been able to obtain release from prison. A step forward could be the granting of Italian citizenship for the Egyptian student of the University of Bologna.

The motion, first signed by the Pd, is in the Senate and is also supported by other parties, as well as by life senator Liliana Segre.

“Hold on, thanks for everyone’s support” is the message that Zaki entrusted to girlfriend. The girl was able to visit him and said that he seemed to be fine. He gave her a copy of the book One Hundred Years of Solitude, with a note inside written in Italian.

The girl reported what she saw in prison to the Facebook page Patrick Libero and he also spoke with the newspaper La Stampa. “In general it seems to me that he is fine, but his eyes do not sparkle as usual. He talks as if he were used to the prison situation but in his questions and sarcastic smiles I read so much pain and anguish. He seemed patient and courageous but he has no hope ».

He hadn’t seen Patrick since January 16 and the visit lasted about twenty minutes. “He told me that by now he got used to the idea of staying in prison and ruling out being released soon. Since the request to change the court has been refused, he thinks no one will give him justice … He reads the books we manage to bring him during visits and stays with his cellmates. He misses so much his affections, studies, he misses freedom ».
