Paul McCartney pays tribute to John Lennon on the day the star turned 83

On the day he would have turned 83, John Lennon was honored by Paul McCartney. The star used his social networks to remember John’s birthday, murdered by a fan in New York, United States, in December 1980.

On his Instagram account, the singer shared an image from one of his shows, where the photo of his old friend appears on the screen. “Celebrating the birthday of my wonderful friend and collaborator, John Lennon,” he wrote in the caption.

Their friendship began during their teens, when Lennon invited McCartney to join the band he was part of at the time, known as “The Quarrymen”. Paul’s parents immediately disapproved of his friendship with John, fearing that the bond could negatively influence their son.

After obtaining family approval, the British singer joined the band, which, a few years later, invited George Harrison and Stuart Sutcliffe. Together, the four founded The Beatles in 1960, rising to stardom as one of the biggest global musical phenomenons.

John’s death

On December 8, 1980, the world received the news that rock idol John Lennon had been murdered. The former Beatle arrived at his home with his wife, artist Yoko Ono, when he was shot four times in the back. The Dakota building, in Manhattan, would be marked by the event ever since.

The singer was rescued and taken to St. Luke’s Roosevelt hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the scene, around 11pm.

John Lennon’s killer also became known after the event. Mark Chapman had met with the singer hours before he killed him, when he asked the former Beatle to autograph a copy of his album ‘Double Fantasy’.

The date has since entered rock history. Every year, tributes are paid to the singer.
