In an interview with CNN Sustainability scientist Paulo Artaxo, professor at the USP Institute of Physics, said that “what we call the normal climate no longer exists.” The program discussed extreme weather events.
According to the teacher, before, it was possible, for example, to plan a crop, to know when to plant and when it will be reaping. For him, “today, this is much harder.”
“Basically, we are disorganizing the global climate system and this with only 1.5 ° C of heating,” explained Artaxo.
The scientist also points out that with the current emissions and commitments of the countries in the Paris Agreement, the projection that science gives to the average increase of Earth’s temperature is 3.1 ° C over the century.
“This is the average temperature. Which means that countries like Brazil, continental areas, will increase in temperature around 4 ° C to 4.5 ° C. Imagine cities such as Cuiabá, Teresina and Palmas with temperatures of 47 ° C in a routine manner,” said the professor.
Artaxo also talked about the worsening of extreme climate events. “An event that took place every 50 years in the last century, if we allow the planet to warm up at 4 ° C, it will be 39 times more frequent in 50 years and will be five times more intense,” warned the scientist.
“What we are seeing now is a free sample of what will be the climate of the future according to the projections of the intergovernmental panel of climate change,” said Artaxo.
