Pavel Durov: We launched Telegram Stars

Telegram founder Pavel Durov reported about the launch of the internal currency of the messenger ecosystem.

“The big day is today, we are launching Telegram Stars – a way to pay for digital services in mini-applications,” he noted.

According to Durov, “unlike old-school apps,” mini-apps like Notcoin do not require installation and allow you to quickly grow a user base due to the “social nature” of the popular messenger.

“With Telegram Stars, mini-applications can accept payments for digital services using the simplest payment methods – in-game purchases on Android and iOS,” he emphasized.

Developers can withdraw their Stars through the Fragment platform using TON. They also have the opportunity to use the currency for additional promotion of their applications in Telegram on preferential terms.

“Apple and Google charge a 30% commission when users purchase Stars. However, Telegram will subsidize advertising purchased with Telegram Stars. So, if developers reinvest Stars into promoting their app, the total commission will be almost 0%! As a result, launching applications in Telegram becomes more economically profitable than creating traditional mobile applications,” Durov shared his thoughts.

The developers emphasized that future updates will add additional functionality to Stars, such as gifts for content creators.

Durov announced the ability to buy digital goods for cryptocurrency in Telegram in April during the Token2049 conference. He promised sellers 70% of the income. The messenger also introduced the ability to send tips in digital assets to content authors.

Earlier, the founder of Telegram said that the 1 billion NOT gifted to him two weeks ago quadrupled in price, from $6 million to $24 million.
