PC makers will increasingly use DRAM-free solid-state drives in low-cost models

Citing industry representatives, the source spoke about a trend emerging in the actions of PC OEMs. PC makers are expected to increasingly use DRAM-free solid-state drives in entry-level and mid-range models, he said. They are pushed to this by the desire to reduce the cost and scarcity of DRAM.

In addition, major vendors such as Samsung Electronics have launched next-generation solid state drives up to 1TB DRAM-free. As noted, coupled with the move to 128-layer flash memory, 3D NAND helps to reduce the cost of SSD.

DRAM-free SSD controllers are offered by all major vendors including Marvell, Phison Electronics, and Silicon Motion Technology. Demand for such relatively inexpensive solutions will grow this year amid a shortage of chips and other components.

At the same time, the market for mobile computers will continue to grow in 2021 – mainly due to an increase in sales of Chromebooks and laptops in the lower and middle price segments.
