In 2020, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and the massive transition to remote working and learning, the global PC market has a second wind. In the first quarter of 2021, shipments of computers and laptops reached a record level over the past 10 years. Now, however, sales are on the decline, according to a new report from market research firm Gartner.
According to Gartner analysts, in the first quarter of 2022, global shipments of PCs, including laptops and Chromebooks, amounted to 77.494 million units. This is 7.3% less compared to the same period last year, when manufacturers managed to sell 83.592 million devices.
It is noted that the main reason for the decline in the PC market is the decline in the popularity of Chromebooks. If you exclude them from the report, it turns out that PC shipments even grew last quarter by 3.3%. Another reason is the decline in demand in the consumer segment, which was felt even in relatively large regional markets, including the United States. But the situation was most acutely felt in the countries of Eastern Europe.
The negative impact of the decline in sales was felt least of all by those manufacturers that are minimally connected with the consumer and educational segments. Among these lucky ones is the American company Dell, which, along with Lenovo and HP, is one of the top three global market leaders.
The first place in terms of supply is occupied by the Chinese company Lenovo. Last quarter it delivered 18.258 million computers, taking 23.6% of the world market against 20.882 million computers and 25% of the market. Lenovo is followed by HP, which shipped 15.863 million PCs in the first quarter of 2022, gaining 20.5% of the market. Deliveries of Lenovo for a year fell by 17.8%. Bronze went to Dell. The American company, contrary to the general trend, was able to increase sales of its computers by 5% – from 13.084 million in the first quarter of 2021 to 13.793 million in the first quarter of 2022.
As for Apple, it ranked fourth last quarter with a 9 percent market share. Mac sales for the year rose 8.6% to 7.005 million units.
