PE firefighters open investigation after cat rescue ends in death

After a rescue that ended tragically with the death of a cat, the Pernambuco Military Fire Department (CBMPE) faces criticism on social media and began an internal investigation into the procedures adopted in the operation, carried out in Triunfo, in Sertão do Pajeú, in last Friday (8).

The episode was widely publicized on the internet after a video was shared showing the moment in which the cat, hit by a jet of water used in an attempt to make it descend, falls from a height of 32 meters from a large tree. .

According to the Fire Department, the action began on November 5th, when residents called the firefighters to rescue the animal, which was on top of a pine tree next to the Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Dores church.

For three days, specialized teams tried to remove the cat, using lifting platforms and rescue methods at height. However, the height of the tree and the fragility of the branches made direct access to the animal impossible.

On the last day of attempts, firefighters opted for a controlled stimulus method, applying a jet of water so that the cat descended on its own.

A firefighter climbed onto a structure to use the jet, while people on the ground held tarpaulins to support the animal if it fell.

However, the cat ended up falling on the opposite side of the protection. According to firefighters, the animal suffered serious injuries and was immediately taken to a veterinary clinic, where it did not survive.

In a statement, the Pernambuco Fire Department justified the operation as highly complex.

“The corporation deeply regrets the loss. Each operation is conducted with the utmost care and dedication. Unfortunately, the extreme height of the tree and the fragility of the vegetation prevented a closer and safer approach”, stated the corporation.

In response, the General Command of the Fire Department determined the opening of an administrative procedure to evaluate the conduct adopted in the operation. Furthermore, a committee was appointed to review protocols for responding to animal rescue incidents, with the aim of preventing similar tragedies.

“The Corporation reaffirms its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, constantly seeking to improve its military personnel and the procedures adopted so that cases like this do not occur again”, concluded the CBMPE in a note.
