Peace marches instead of Carnival parades

After yesterday’s mass anti-war demonstration for Ukraine in Berlin, many of the traditional Carnival parades are being turned into peace marches.

As the war in Ukraine rages after the Russian invasion, more and more ordinary citizens in many European cities are taking to the streets to demonstrate peacefully against the war. So in Germany.

“Stop the war, stop Putin”, “No to war”, “Peace in Ukraine and Europe” are the slogans seen on the streets of the German capital since yesterday after the historic, as many describe it, massive peace march on Sunday with over 100,000 protesters between the Brandenburg Gate and the Victory Pillar. Everyone’s eyes are on Cologne, the stronghold of the German Carnival, where the organizers of the parade say in a statement that they can not remain indifferent to the rapid developments in Ukraine, even if it means canceling the carnival celebrations for a while. after the cancellations already brought by the pandemic. “This is a good time to send a message of solidarity to the Ukrainians,” said Holger Kirs, one of the organizers of the historic Cologne Carnival.

Parades are being canceled in other cities in western Germany, such as Duisburg, while in some other cities, such as Essen, organizers are inviting participants to other initiatives, such as donating blood at the city’s exhibition center.
