Peace solution in Eastern Europe depends on support for Ukraine, says US ambassador to the United Nations, in Brasilia

Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who represents the United States at the United Nations (UN), said that any attempt to resolve the war in Eastern Europe must consider supporting Ukraine. The statement was given this Tuesday (2nd), after an agenda with the Brazilian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, in Brasília.

“We encourage countries to engage on issues related to finding a solution to the war, but it is important that in doing so they have to engage with Ukraine. We cannot move forward in a situation that leaves Ukraine out of the equation.”

The statement was a clear indirect to Brazil, mainly due to recent speeches by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who tried to “blame” Ukraine for the conflict. The ambassador stressed that the position bothered the United States, but signaled that the matter was a turning point.

“We discussed this issue [na reunião com Mauro Vieira]. I expressed, as the government had done before, our disappointment with the statements that were made. For the moment I will say that Brazil has consistently voted in favor of resolutions condemning Russia in the Security Council, as on February 23 of this year. They voted for a peace resolution in Ukraine.”

The ambassador also said that she spoke with the chancellor about China, however, respecting Brazil’s autonomy in trade relations with the Asian country. According to her, she also discussed the possible Brazilian participation in a new peacekeeping force in Haiti.

“The Haitian government has requested security support, and we continue to engage in dialogue with Brazil and other Security Council countries, as well as others outside the Council, on how we can most effectively support Haiti’s security concerns.”

Linda Thomas-Greenfield will stay in Brazil until next Thursday (4th), when she will have a meeting with the head of the Special Advisory Office of the Presidency of the Republic, Celso Amorim.

The focus of the visit, according to the US Embassy, includes agendas on topics such as promoting democracy, combating climate change, food security, continued cooperation in regional migration and ensuring equity for marginalized racial, ethnic and indigenous communities.

The ambassador’s visit to the country includes a visit to Salvador, Bahia, in an event focused on combating racial discrimination.
