The majority of the 90 countries that participated in the Peace Summit for Ukraine in Switzerland supported the event’s final declaration, Swiss President Viola Amherd said this Sunday (16).
Some nations have not signed the document, including Mexico, Saudi Arabia and India.
Amherd said at the close of the meeting in the Swiss town of Buergenstock that the content of the final communiqué calls for the safe use of nuclear energy, the protection of maritime shipping routes and the return of displaced children and illegally detained civilians.
The Swiss president recognized the need for Russia to be included in future negotiations and said that the United Nations Charter must be respected.
“The support of world leaders demonstrates that the rule of international law can be restored, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the conference this Sunday (16).
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan rejected a peace proposal put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying it was a “completely absurd vision”.
Sullivan added during the closing plenary session this Sunday (16) that meeting Moscow’s demands would make Kiev even more vulnerable to further aggression.
The final declaration was supported by the majority of the more than 90 countries that participated in the event. However, some nations have not signed the document, including Mexico, Saudi Arabia and India.
Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena Ibarra said there was no international support for any peace initiative.
Some European allies said a broader reach was needed.
Moscow, which was not invited and made it clear it did not want to participate, called the event a waste of time. Russia has put forward rival proposals from afar.
China was another notable absence.
