Pearl Harbor: pictures of America at war

“Photograph whatever happens. Above all, focus on the men. Ships and planes will become obsolete, but men will always be there ». Edward Steichen, at the head of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit, he told the photographers called to document the American war effort. The United States entered World War II 80 years ago. On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, hitting the US fleet in Hawaii.

The project History & Photography – History told by Photography, in collaboration with the cultural and exhibition center The Glass House of Milan, remembers the anniversary with America at war that unites Total war. The second world conflict, suspended in autumn 2020, and The Pacific War. From Pearl Harbor to the atomic bomb, with double the number of images compared to the previous version. The exhibitions are open until 22 May.

The first exhibition is offered in an analog version (framed prints of digital reproductions), the second in the form of a large-format photoprojection to enhance the spectacular nature of his photographs. The admission ticket, for individual exhibitions or a flat rate for both, offers the possibility of viewing them via the web for a week in manual slideshows starting from the Monday following its purchase. To the students, and to the professors who accompany them, this possibility is extended for a month in order to be able to use the contents of the exhibitions, in digital version, for in-depth studies for scholastic purposes.

At the center is the Japanese aggression in the Pacific, defined as “infamous” by Washington because it took place without being preceded by a formal declaration of war. This attack prompted the United States to go to war although US public opinion had hitherto been opposed. The Pacific War. From Pearl Harbor to the atomic bomb tells this part of the conflict with 130 photographs, many portray women engaged in war. Total War instead it consists of about 60 images that tell the story of the Second World War starting from Hitler’s seizure of power. They are photos that come from Africa, Europe and all fronts.
