According to cybersecurity company PeckShield, in October there were about 20 hacker attacks on cryptocurrency projects, and total losses reached $88.47 million.

Analysts said the biggest incident last month was the exploit of the decentralized lending protocol Radiant Capital. On October 17, Ancilia cybersecurity experts warned of suspicious activity in the protocol’s smart contract on the BNB Chain network. Spot on Chain estimates that the protocol lost $53 million. At the beginning of the year, Radiant Capital was also hacked, losing 1,900 ETH worth $4.5 million.

At the end of October, another high-profile incident became known when a hacker hacked crypto addresses controlled by the US government. They contained crypto assets seized during the hacking of the Bitfinex exchange in 2016. The attacker managed to steal digital assets worth $20 million, but later returned about $19.3 million to the hacked address.

PeckShield experts also mentioned a hacker attack on the EigenLayer restaking protocol, as a result of which $5.7 million worth of crypto assets were stolen. The attacker moved these funds to the HitBTC and Bybit crypto exchanges.

In October, decentralized autonomous organization Tapioca DAO lost $4.7 million due to a social engineering attack. The hackers used the compromised key to gain control of the token transfer contract and then issued a huge amount of USDO tokens. They then withdrew $3 million from the USDO/USDC liquidity pool to the Uniswap decentralized exchange. Tapioca was later able to return 1,000 ETH for $2.7 million.

Last month, another decentralized protocol, Sunray Finance, suffered. Attackers stole $2.86 million using a malicious smart contract on the Arbitrum chain. The hacker used the Across Bridge to fund his initial wallet, created 200 trillion SUN tokens and exchanged them for USDT stablecoins. This caused the SUN rate to drop to zero.

According to PeckShield, in June the losses suffered by crypto projects due to hackers were twice as large – $176.2 million. Although the number of incidents remained the same – 20 hacker attacks.
