Pedophile priests: there are 418 in Italy, according to the report of the Abuse Network

Pedophile priests in Italy, according to the first Report of survivors of Italian clergy sexual abusepresented by the Permanent Observatory of the Abuse Network and by the international association Eca Global (Ending Clergy Abuse), would be well 418: 88 anonymous (the alleged victims have chosen not to proceed under the public profile), 166 reported and 164 convicted.

The data used to process the report came from the Rete L’Abuso association, and are to be considered «in default of the real extent of the phenomenon», as it is written in the text. «The reference time frame is of about 13 years old; the reports contained in the document are collected directly from the reports of the alleged victims; the data refer solely to priests and do not include related industries (catechists, educators, animators and lay people in general); all the cases counted are attributable solely to sexual abuse against minors”.

The report also breaks down cases of pedophile priests by region: in first place is Lombardy (69 cases), followed by Veneto (40), Sicily (39), from Piedmont (37) and Campania (34). Then there are Lazio (29 cases), Puglia and Tuscany (25 each), Liguria (23), Calabria (21), Emilia Romagna (19), Sardinia (12), Friuli Venezia Giulia, Trentino Alto Adige and Umbria (8 each ), Marche (7), Abruzzo (6), Molise (4), Basilicata and Vatican City (2).

According to the association, «almost systematically there are cases where only one of the abused minors reports facts which the Judicial Authority then confirms, even if there are several minors present, they do not proceed with investigations against the other potential victims, also for any help. In essence it rarely proceeds ex officio».

Francesco Zanardi of the Abuse Network explained that the report, «with the addition of names and surnames, will be sent to the national authorities such as the Attorney General of the Republic, the General Command of the Carabinieri and the Police, and once reworked and extended also to the United Nations and, in the form of a petition, to the European Union».
