The singer Pedro Sampaio 26, launched this Wednesday (4) his new album, “Astro” . In 15 tracks, the album brings together different musical genres — from its traditional funk to pagode — and partnerships with artists such as Luisa Sonza, Marina Sena and DJ Topo.
In an interview with CNN the singer said that the debut shows an accumulation of maturity he has gained since his last album, “Chama Meu Nome”, and symbolizes his eclectic taste that came from birth — from a family, according to him, typically Brazilian.
“I started as a DJ and felt I had to evolve. I started producing, I felt I had to evolve. I started looking for people to sing my songs, no one wanted to sing, so I started singing. Then, I saw the power of dance in relation to my music and I started wanting to learn how to dance. I’m constantly reinventing myself, bringing new things and ‘Astro’ is the synthesis of that”, said the singer.
The tracks on the new album follow a lyrical pattern, as the artist explains, but the songs bring together beats that refer to different musical genres, which, according to Pedro, is a legacy from his family who listened to “everything” at home.
“I was born and raised in a Brazilian family in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro and at every family gathering I listened to axé, pagode, funk, music from the 80s, all at the same time. I grew up being bombarded by various references”, he said.
He also said that “Astro” is similar to a Brazilian party — which plays very different musical styles.
The album cover, which was creatively produced by Luciano Schmitz, shows the singer dressed in gold on top of a lamppost with some visible wires and a kite tangled up. The typically Brazilian characteristics once again bring to mind his roots.
“I am a Brazilian artist and I have no intention of making music to sound like a foreigner, I have the intention of making music to sound Brazilian. That’s why I do it.” [o remix da música] ‘Cavalinho’, that’s why I do ‘Ensaio das Maravilhas’ and that’s why I think I have a lot of opening in the market outside of Brazil”, commented Sampaio.
Among the new tracks, the singer highlights “Minha Vida”, a voice and guitar project in which the artist sings for the first time without the autotune voice mixing feature — which is already a characteristic of his productions.
“It’s a song that the public didn’t expect from Pedro Sampaio because I sing from the inside out. It’s an experience of mine, a questioning, it’s my life. It talks about a person who has arrived, who is there achieving their goal, is in the process, is enjoying it. There, in my case, traveling, doing shows, being away from home but, at the same time [pensando]: ‘Is it all worth it?’”, said Pedro Sampaio in the interview.
In addition to this, the song “Prece”, in partnership with MC Thiago, which was released before the release of the full album. “Precisely to have a leading role, because if it was released [com] the album, was going to be devoured.”
The feat began at an airport gate where the singer got off to perform a show and the teenager was at the gate trying to draw the artist’s attention to his own songs.
“He was shirtless and in shorts in the dark street, shouting and competing with several other people. He came with courage, determination and attitude. I looked into his eyes and saw the sparkle in his eyes and what he sang to me touched my heart,” said Sampaio.
