Pegasus spyware detected on Spanish Prime Minister and Secretary of Defense’s mobile phones

Spanish authorities have spotted Pegasus spyware on the mobile phones of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Defense Minister Margarita Robles, Spanish Prime Minister Felix Bolanos said today.

Bolanos told a news conference that Sanchez’s phone had been infected with the software in May 2021 and that at least one data leak had been recorded.

The Spanish official did not say who could spy on the prime minister or whether there were any suspicious foreign or Spanish groups behind it.

“The interventions were illegal and external. External means were used by unofficial bodies and without state permission,” he said, adding that the infections had been reported to the justice ministry and the Supreme Court would have jurisdiction over the case.

The announcement came amid intense pressure on the coalition government to provide explanations after the Canadian Citizen Lab said more than 60 people linked to the Catalan separatist movement had been targeted by the Israeli NSO Pegasus spy software.

Following allegations of espionage by members of the Catalan separatist movement, the main ally of the minority government in Parliament, the left-wing Catalan Independence Party (ERC), has stated that it will not support the government until Madrid takes steps to restore confidence.

Gabriel Roufian, an MP and spokesman for the ERC, said on Twitter: “The state has been spying, spying and will continue to spy.”
