Pelosi defends North Korea’s denuclearization, plans to visit Korean border

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her South Korean counterpart pledged on Thursday to support efforts to maintain a strong deterrent against North Korea and achieve its denuclearization.

A joint statement was issued after Pelosi met with South Korea’s National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo in Seoul, in which they expressed concerns about the North’s evolving nuclear threats.

Pelosi arrived in South Korea on Wednesday night after a brief stop in Taiwan, and met with US embassy officials in Seoul on Thursday before speaking with Kim and other lawmakers.

Later on Thursday, Pelosi plans to visit the Joint Security Area near the heavily fortified inter-Korean border, jointly patrolled by the United Nations Command (UN) led by the US and North Korea, a South Korean official said.

The House leader would be the highest-ranking US official to visit the area since former President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met there in 2019.
