Peng Shui case: Beijing opposes ‘politicization’ of tennis

Fire against the institution that manages the women’s professional tennis circuit for “politicization of the sport”, after the decision of the WTA, the Women’s Tennis Association, to suspends tournaments in China in support of tennis player Peng Shui launches Beijing.

“We are firmly opposed to any politicization of the sport,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters, according to the Athens News Agency.

The WTA, the Women’s Tennis Federation, has announced the immediate postponement of all its tournaments in China due to its concern about the condition of tennis player Peng Shui.

Concern for Peng Shui

The athlete had disappeared from public view for three weeks after accusing former Vice President Zhang Gaoli of sexual assault.

WTA official Steve Simon said he had “serious doubts” about whether Peng was “free, safe and not subject to blackmail.”

“I do not know if under these circumstances I can ask our athletes to play there,” he said.

The federation is urging an in-depth investigation into Peng’s allegations.

However, the organization does not believe that the video call of the tennis player with Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, is enough proof for her safety.
