Penis Museum is attraction with about 600 real phalluses in Iceland

Despite being small and with an estimated population of around 385,000 inhabitants, Iceland has 266 museums in its territory, according to the country’s tourism agency. And one of them draws worldwide attention: the Icelandic Phallological Museum or, in popular parlance, the Penis Museum .

Located in the capital Reykjavik, it is considered the the only one of its kind in the world and the largest dedicated to displaying the members of different species including Icelandic and foreign fauna.

According to the museum, there are currently about 600 penises from 160 different animal species on display – most whales.

“At first people thought there was something wrong with me, but over time they saw that I was a serious collector, accurate with the information I kept, and that there was no nothing pornographic in the collection. I’m glad people don’t think I’m a pervert anymore.” Sigurður Hjartarson, in testimony to The Guardian last year.

At the site, it is possible to see up close from the penis of two meters in length of a sperm whale, the largest on display, to the member of a European mouse with less than one millimeter, which is seen with the help of a magnifying glass.

There are several ways that the phalluses are arranged: they vary from dry, stuffed and also mounted, and may even be submerged in alcohol or formaldehyde.

There is also a human penis among the items: it is a copy of a 95-year-old man who died in 2011 and left his genitals in his will to the museum. The item, however, was reduced to a wrinkled mass preserved in a vial of formaldehyde.

And the museum wants to increase that number: for the future, two “well-endowed” young people, one from the United States and the other from Germany, have already promised to donate their penises when they die.

In addition to penises, the Falological Museum is also dedicated to testicles, sperm, bones and foreskins. Hundreds of pieces of art and cultural items related to the “lower parts” of animals can also be seen there.

“The Icelandic Phallological Museum is dedicated to collecting, studying and presenting real phalluses and all things phallic. It is possible for individuals to undertake serious studies in the field of phallology in an organized and scientific way,” says the official website.
