Pentagon dismisses Base Commander in Greenland after a visit by JD Vance

The United States has announced the resignation of a Pituffik Space Base commander in Greenland on Thursday due to the “loss of confidence in his leadership capacity,” after the visit of Vice President Jd Vance to the island last month.

“Actions to undermine the chain of command or subvert President Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated in the Defense Department,” wrote Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell in a statement published in X on Thursday, announcing the removal of Susannah Meyers.

Following Vance’s visit to the island at the end of March, the Military.com website reported that Meyers sent an email to the space based by contesting the vice president’s actions and comments during the trip. Parnell included a link to the Military.com article.com in its publication on X.

The news site reported that the detached commander wrote in an email: “I can’t understand the current policy, but what I know is that the US government concerns discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday do not reflect Pituffik’s spatial base.”

Colonel Shawn Lee took office as Meyers, according to a press release of the Space Operations Command.

Removal highlights the continuity of movements by the United States to control Greenland, as President Donald Trump promised to acquire the land “in one way or another”, and Vance repeatedly stated that the island is vulnerable and that the US “had no other option” but increasing its presence there.

Vance, accompanied by his wife, the second USha Vance lady, visited the US Space Force Station in Pituffik, on the northwest coast of Greenland, 1,600 kilometers from the capital Nuuk last month.

Usha Vance initially planned to participate in a dog -pulled sled race on the island, but expected protests interrupted the visit.

During his trip, the vice president highly defended the American control of Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. He stated that Greenland would be better “under US security protection than under Denmark’s security protection.”

Trump has also manifested openly about his goal of gaining Greenland and said he will “not remove anything from the table” to obtain the island, including military strength, but there is a “good possibility” that it is not necessary. He also confirmed that he was involved “for sure” in serious discussions about the potential attachment of Greenland.
