US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin spoke today with his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu and called for a de-escalation of the crisis in Ukraine, the Pentagon said.
“Austin has called for a de-escalation, the return of Russian forces encircling Ukraine to their bases and a diplomatic solution,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that the talks were initiated by the American side and that the two ministers discussed “security issues of mutual interest.”
On February 12, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu also had a telephone conversation with Lloyd Austin. The Pentagon had announced at the time that the ministers “discussed the increase in military forces from Russia to Crimea and around Ukraine.”
