The US Secretary of State ‘Anthony Blinken said today during a visit to Kabul that it was time for US forces to withdraw from Afghanistan and warned the Taliban that any attack on them would receive a “very strong response”.
Speaking at a news conference at the US embassy, Blinken also said the United States had never intended to maintain a permanent military presence in Afghanistan.
“If, as our forces withdraw, they are attacked by the Taliban, this will be met with a very strong response,” he said, adding that US support for Afghan security forces fighting Islamist insurgents would continue.
The US diplomat said the United States would “intensify” its diplomacy on Afghanistan and do “everything it can” to advance efforts to secure a peace deal between Kabul and the rebels.
Washington will also continue its humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan and defend the rights of women and girls, Blinken added.
