People in despair: Shanghai residents scream through their windows in response to the lockdown

Videos have been made viral by Shanghai in China where residents are heard screaming from their apartments as a drone sends warnings about restrictive measures against coronavirus.

One of the videos released on Twitter, according to Newsweek, shows the tall buildings in Shanghai at night and people are heard screaming from their windows.

“The people of Shanghai are angry, they can not stand it anymore. China’s Covid Zero Case Strategy Becomes Dangerous ” says Ian Bremmer, political scientist and head of the Eurasia Group.

The video was originally posted by writer and radio producer Patrick Madrid and has been viewed more than 3 million times.

“This video was taken yesterday in Shanghai, China, by the father of a close friend of mine. He confirmed that it is authentic: People are screaming after a week of total lockdown, they do not leave their apartment for any reason “, he wrote on Twitter.

Closing borders, endless quarantines, mass testing: clinging to a “zero Covid” strategy, China has recorded relatively low death rates since the beginning of the pandemic.

But with the spread of the Omicron variant, Shanghai has surpassed the 20,000 daily Covid-19 cases. And the lockdown, originally announced as a gradual and local measure, seems to pull indefinitely as the rest of the world learns to live with the virus.

Many of the 25 million inhabitants look tired from the triumphant statements of the ruling Communist Party and express on social media their anger over food shortages, the lockdown and the excessive zeal of the authorities.
