President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) attended the wake of Pepe Mujica, friend of the petista and former president of Uruguay, this Thursday (15). In a press release, he highlighted his colleague’s legacy and stressed that his ideas will continue to influence society.
“What is gratifying for us humans is that a person like Pepe Mujica does not die. If it was his body, his flesh goes. But the ideas that Pepe Mujica has planted in all these years, including the generosity of a man who spent 14 years in the jail and managed to go to freedom without any hatred of the people who have taken it, the people who tortured him,” Lula said.
“This is a gift from God that is only granted to superior human beings. And Pepe Mujica is a superior person,” he added.
Then the Brazilian head of state pointed out that he met many people for those who have respect, but that Mujica was a “special figure.”
Lula even awards his friend with the National Order of Cruzeiro do Sul, the greatest honor granted by the Brazilian government to foreigners.
“[Mujica era aquela figura] More loving, which I learned to respect, admire and then every step that Pepe took after he assumed the presidency of Uruguay, ”he said.
Lula confirmed that he called the current Uruguayan president, Yamandú Orsi, to hear what time would be the wake and stressed that he did not want to say goodbye to his friend.
“I now go to Brazil making sure that my coming here was to give a hug to one of the people I learned to respect as I rarely respected someone in my life,” he concluded.
Mujica and Pope Francis’ deaths are irreparable, says Lula
Also during the statement, Lula stated that the deaths of Pepe Mujica and Pope Francis are irreparable.
The petista commented that the pontiff, who died in late April, was a very special human being and with generosity above average.
“Now I hope the two together [Mujica e Francisco]Where they are in heaven, be sure to look and be able to bless so that humanity is better. For humanity to be more fraternal, more generous and that politics can be done more worthy, more respectfully and solidary, ”concluded the Brazilian President.
