People of Ukraine are fighting bravely, says NATO

At a press conference held on Tuesday (1st), Jens Stoltenberg, secretary general of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) declared that the “people of Ukraine are fighting bravely”. Beside him were Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, and Kaja Kallas, the Estonian prime minister. The trio got together to talk about the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Stoltenberg also said he condemns Putin’s war. “Allies are imposing sanctions and we are increasing our support for Ukraine to be able to defend itself.” The secretary-general also informed that NATO is sending weapons to Ukrainian territory, in addition to millions of euros for the country.

“We need to protect every inch of NATO territory.” Stoltenberg urged Putin to withdraw his forces from Ukraine and make diplomatic efforts in good faith.”

Estonia’s prime minister said Russia’s president has shown himself to be an autocrat and an aggressor capable of attacking his neighbors. “He has released 200,000 soldiers, and his targets are hospitals, schools and kindergartens… innocent Ukrainian lives.”

Kaja said that Belarus is a co-aggressor in the conflict. On Sunday (27), according to the Central Election Commission of Belarus, about 78.63% of the eligible voting population participated in a referendum vote.

At 65.16%, the population of Belarus voted in favor of a new constitution that will eliminate the country’s non-nuclear status and give Moscow-backed President Alexander Lukashenko the opportunity to run for two more terms in office. Lukashenko has been in power since 1994.

Still with the referendum, Belarus would renounce its ‘non-nuclear’ status, following the launch of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine of the former Soviet nation last week. Follow the special coverage of CNN.

For the prime minister, the entire international community must take a stand “against evil”. Kaja stressed that the forces against Putin cannot stop until the Russian president is stopped. She believes that “[o mundo irá] witness even greater horrors, including bombings.”

‘Putin cannot succeed in attack’, says Boris Johnson

Throughout the speech, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that “Putin cannot succeed in attack”. “He also highlighted that the world is more dangerous, and a more unstable place.”

The British prime minister reported that the UK has deployed 22,000 members of its armed forces to train and help Ukraine, and 140 million pounds to aid the humanitarian effort. “These are defensive measures, and nothing more than that,” he said.

The UK has carried out its biggest package of sanctions ever imposed on a G20 nation. Rossiya, IS Bank, General Bank, Promsvyazbank and Black Sea Bank, as well as three high-ranking Russian executives — Gennady Timchenko, Igor Rotenberg and Boris Rotenberg — had announced lockdowns.

“We want to prevent Russian companies from being able to raise funds in sterling or even dollars. We want them to stop raising funds in the UK markets and we want to remove the veil that hides the ownership of property in this country”, declared the prime minister.

The sanctions, Johnson said ahead of the announcement, would be “aimed not just at entities in Donbass [regiões separatistas]Luhansk and Donetsk, but in Russia itself – targeting Russian economic interests as much as we can”.

Russia’s once-mighty superpower economy is now smaller than Italy’s, based on IMF data, with a nominal GDP of about $1.7 trillion.
