People over 50 have an increased body mass index. How to stay healthy

Doctors urge this year to pay special attention to the health of people over 50 years old. The reason for this was various studies of specialists on the issue of BMI (body mass index), which increases with age. This is a value that allows you to assess the ratio of weight and height of a person and understand whether the weight is normal, overweight or underweight.

At the beginning of this year, Zepp Health platform specialists analyzed data from more than 6 million adult users of Zepp and Amazfit wearable devices. They took into account such indicators as the number of steps, sleep duration, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), stress level, body mass index, duration and intensity of training, and so on. After processing these data, it turned out that Russians have an increase in BMI with age.

In people aged 50 years and older, only 25% of the body mass index was normal, while among 30-year-olds it was 52%. Experts explain this by saying that older people move less, metabolic processes slow down, and nutrition remains the same. Overweight occurs, which can lead to various health problems, including diseases of the cardiovascular system, respiratory organs, and diabetes.

To maintain a normal body mass index, people aged 50 years and older are recommended the following:

  1. Pay attention to physical activity: housework, walking, Nordic walking, yoga (at least 150 minutes per week at moderate intensity) or cycling, running (at least 70 minutes per week at high intensity).
  2. Pay attention to nutrition: mentally divide the plate into 4 quarters before each meal. Two-quarters should be vegetables and fruits, one-quarter protein foods, and the rest carbohydrates. The daily norm of such plates is three per day.
  3. Pay attention to sleep: experts recommend going to bed and waking up at the same time. At the same time, the duration of sleep is not important, the main thing is to feel rested in the morning.
  4. Pay attention to mental health: It is very important to have a favorite activity / hobby, which allows you to live a full and interesting life.
