Dramatic scenes were seen on the streets of Bolivia’s capital, La Paz, this Wednesday (26), after President Luis Arce denounced an attempted coup and asked for international support.
Military invasion
Military units led by General Juan José Zúñiga, recently removed from military command, gathered in the central square.
With armored vehicles, the Bolivian armed forces invaded the presidential palace, but later withdrew.
Plaza Murillo houses the presidential palace and Congress. A Reuters news agency witness saw an armored vehicle crash into the door of the presidential palace and soldiers rush in.
Escalation of tensions
Tensions have been rising in Bolivia ahead of the 2025 general elections, with former left-wing president Evo Morales planning to run against former ally Arce – creating a major rift in the ruling socialist party and generating broader political uncertainty.
Many do not want the return of Morales, who governed between 2006 and 2019, until he was deposed amid widespread protests and replaced by an interim conservative government.
Then, in 2020, Arce won the elections.
