People trapped inside Gaza’s Al Shifa Hospital plan to begin burying bodies of victims inside the hospital complex today, without the approval of Israeli forces because the situation has become unsustainable, according to doctor Ahmed Al Mokhallalati and the Ministry of Health spokesman from Gaza, Ashraf Al-Qidra.
They said more than 100 bodies had accumulated there, creating an acute health crisis.
“We are planning to bury them today in a mass grave inside the Al Shifa medical complex. It will be very dangerous, as we do not have any coverage or protection from the ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross), but we have no other options, the bodies of the martyrs have started to decompose”, said Qidra. “The men are digging now as we speak.”
Qidra put the number of bodies accumulated in Al Shifa at around 100. Mokhallalati said it was around 120.
The hospital, besieged by Israeli forces and close to where intense fighting against Hamas has been taking place, is no longer functioning normally, and faces a lack of electricity, water and other basic elements.
Mokhallalati said the bodies were generating an unbearable odor and posing a risk of infection. “Today civilians started digging inside the hospital to try to bury the bodies under their own responsibility, without any agreement from the Israeli side,” he said.
“Burying 120 bodies requires a lot of equipment, it cannot be done manually or individually. It will take hours and hours to bury all these bodies.”
Israel says Al Shifa Hospital sits atop tunnels that house a headquarters for Hamas fighters, who are blamed for using patients as human shields. Hamas denies it.
