Pepe Mujica gives a farewell speech at a campaign event

The former president of Uruguay, José “Pepe” Mujica, gave a farewell speech on Saturday (19), at a campaign event for presidential candidate, Yamandú Orsi.

During the event for the mayor of the second largest region in Uruguay, Mujica said he was “close to leaving to the place from which he will never return”.

“But I’m happy because when my arms run out, there will be thousands of arms replacing the fight… Until always, I give my heart”, added the former president in a speech.

Uruguayans go to the polls on October 27th to choose the country’s next president. If no presidential candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, a second round will be held on November 19.

The 89-year-old former president of Uruguay is receiving treatment for esophageal cancer. As a result of radiotherapy to combat the malignant tumor, Mujica has “kidney disease”, and has been hospitalized and undergone surgery in recent months.

He explained that the treatment is complex for an immunological disease that he has had for more than 20 years. “[Isso] it affected, among other things, the kidneys, which creates obvious difficulties for chemotherapy and surgery.”

Who is Mujica

Mujica, presided over Uruguay between 2010 and 2015. After leaving power, he served as a senator until 2020. He leads the Popular Participation Movement of the leftist Frente Amplio party.
