Pepe Mujica is hospitalized for the third time in ten days

Former Uruguayan President José “Pepe” Mujica was hospitalized this Thursday (5) for the third time in the last ten days, in Montevideo.

According to doctor Raquel Pannone, Mujica was hospitalized to receive intravenous fluids, a treatment he had already been receiving at home.

In recent months, the 89-year-old former president received successful radiation treatment to stop esophageal cancer, which Pannone said has been cured.

But “the consequences of radiotherapy caused problems ingesting food and liquids”, explained the doctor.

For this reason, Mujica is receiving a serum treatment to help him stay hydrated. Something that was done on the farm where he lives was made difficult by the “poor venous flow” due to vasculitis, which is why he was hospitalized, explained Pannone.

“He was tested and we started rehydrating him intravenously, which had an almost immediate effect on him,” the doctor said at a press conference.

On Saturday (31), Mujica was hospitalized after eating something too solid for his damaged esophagus.

Before that, he had been hospitalized on the night of August 26-27, due to a decompensation in his values, to have serum placed and undergo tests and controls, according to reports.

Now, the former president will remain hospitalized until he can “continue treatment” at home and “tolerate higher-density foods,” the doctor explained.
