Pepe Mujica’s funeral began this Wednesday (14) in Montevideo, Uruguay. Before the ceremony, there was a funeral procession in the streets of the capital in honor of the former president. See photos in the gallery above.
A crowd is attending the wake, which is held at the Legislative Palace. A large line formed outside the building. In addition, authorities were present, such as current President Yamandú Orsi.
Mujica, an icon of Latin American politics, died at the age of 89 on Tuesday (13). Following his desire, the former president’s ashes will be buried in his farm next to Bitch Manuela.
The wake was scheduled to last 24 hours, but may change depending on how many people attend.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is returning from travel to Russia and China. He will go to the ceremony in honor of the Uruguayan.
Lula and Mujica were friends, and in December 2024, the petista awarded the former president with the National Order of the Southern Cruise, the greatest Brazilian honor to a foreigner.
