In the M-branded series of smartphones from the Poco brand, the emphasis has always been on a large battery. The rest of the technical characteristics came out on a solid four and did not offer any innovative solutions. But the hero of the review has a Pro prefix for a reason. In the new product, the manufacturer installed a good screen with increased smoothness of 90 Hz, a loud, symmetrically located stereo pair of speakers and provided a groundwork for the future in the form of support for 5G networks.

Appearance
The novelty can hardly be called compact, because the dimensions of 163.6 × 75.8 mm are more suitable for a phablet. However, thanks to the matte glass that protects the back panel, the device is secure and grippy in the hand and does not collect many fingerprints.

In the latest models from Xiaomi’s sub-delusions, there is a clear inheritance of a certain design of the back, and in particular of the camera unit. This has a positive effect on recognition, but I would like some freshness in appearance.

The front of the smartphone is a 6.6-inch display with an IPS matrix. The viewing angles are as large as possible and without color distortion. The maximum brightness is not very high and may not be enough under the sun, but indoors it is more than enough. Out of the box, the 60 Hz mode is activated and high smoothness will have to be turned on manually. 90 Hz gives a pleasant smoothness of animation in the interface and most of the applications, but slight twitching is still present, which is quite attributed to the budget positioning of the gadget.

In the upper part of the display there is a non-annoying cutout for the front camera, and in the lower part a characteristic feature of state employees is a thickened bezel protrusion.

Physical controls are concentrated on the right side: a volume rocker and a power button combined with a fingerprint scanner. On the left side there is a combined slot for two SIM-cards or a SIM-card and an SD-drive. Above is one of the stereo speakers, a microphone and an infrared port. Below is a second stereo pair, a microphone, a Type-C connector and, as a tribute to the past, a mini-jack.

Synthetics
The system-on-a-chip represented by the MediaTek Dimensity 810 has proven itself well in low-cost smartphones such as Redmi Note 11 and Redmi Note 11T 5G. The chip achieves a moderate number of points in benchmarks and performs well in everyday life.

Poco M4 Pro 5G can easily act as a gaming solution: CoD Mobile runs ideally at medium settings with high smoothness of the picture without slowdowns and freezes.

Autonomy
The high smoothness of the 90 Hz screen, coupled with the IPS-matrix, are quite power-hungry characteristics. However, the time that the Poco M4 Pro 5G showed in the proprietary test of autonomy (almost 22 hours) is equivalent to a day and a half of active use in practice.

The included 33 W power supply fully charges your smartphone in 2 hours.

Camera
The main camera has a resolution of 50 megapixels and copes well even in difficult shooting conditions: indoors and at night. In daytime conditions, I want to note the desire of the algorithms to convey the correct white balance and lighten all areas in the shadow, which is why the contrast is lost and the picture looks slightly faded.

The super wide-angle lens does an excellent job of capturing as many objects around as possible, but it is not recommended to use it in low light. There will be a lot of noise in the picture and a slow shutter speed in manual mode does not save the situation – the lack of optical stabilization leads to blur.

Long exposure night mode corrects the white balance well, removing excess yellowness in the photo and highlights. However, very often the pictures come out with a blur.

The selfie camera has a wide field of view, but a rather weak dynamic range. In the presence of luminous objects in the frame, there is a high probability of loss of information in these places. In the dark, the matrix makes a lot of noise and you can’t count on high details.

Review
The Poco M4 Pro 5G turned out to be a very pleasant and balanced device. It showed excellent results in terms of autonomy and good smoothness inside the system. I would especially note the loud and clear stereo pair of speakers with a good location at the top and bottom ends. But, like all budget models, the novelty has a weak point – it is photo capabilities.
pros
- Recognizable brand design and non-marking back cover.
- High refresh rate and high quality screen.
- Long-term autonomy.
- Stereo speakers.
- Wide angle of view of the front camera.
Minuses
- Weak photo opportunities.
- Slow charging.
