The civil police of Pernambuco announced the start of a strike starting at 00:00 on Friday (9) during Carnival. The decision was taken at a meeting held this Tuesday (6) after an attempt at negotiation with government representatives did not result in significant progress.
The category, represented by the Civil Police Union of Pernambuco (Sinpol-PE), alleges the lack of investment in public security. Seeking dialogue with governor Raquel Lyra (PSDB-PE), Sinpol representatives went to Palácio Campo das Princesas, headquarters of the Pernambuco government, to negotiate with government authorities.
According to the union, the meeting ended without defining the start of negotiations. “This is the first time in the history of the union that the category launched a strike because a government did not want to open a negotiating table”, said Áureo Cisneiros, president of Sinpol-PE. “From midnight on Carnival Friday, civil police officers will go on strike. The governor is responsible for this situation, which will harm public security in the state,” he said.
This Wednesday (7), Sinpol filed a mediation request with the Court of Justice of Pernambuco, so that the state government can negotiate with the civil police.
Scheduled to start at midnight on Friday (9), the movement aims to draw attention to the demands of the class. According to Cisneiros, the governor did not fulfill promises made during the electoral campaign regarding public safety. A CNN , the president of Sinpol also said that the situation is reversible. “The governor can still reverse it. They have until midnight on Friday to specifically signal the opening of the negotiation table”, concluded Cisneiros.
In a statement, the Pernambuco government said that a union commission was received on Tuesday (6), at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas, by representatives of the Civil House and the Administration Secretariat. The government highlights that dialogue has been opened and that a schedule for reopening the negotiating tables will be presented in February, with the aim of discussing the category's demands.
