Pernambuco registers 10 deaths after heavy rains

According to the Pernambuco state government, the rains that occurred this week have already caused the death of 10 people. In Olinda, there were 4 deaths, three caused by landslides and one by a motorcyclist who tried to cross a flooded area. In Jaboatão dos Guararapes, a man died dragged by the current after trying to save his pet. In Camaragibe, three people died in the Córrego do Desastre.

In Recife, two people died as a result of landslides that occurred in the Córrego do Jenipapo and Sítio dos Pintos.

This Saturday (28), heavy rains hit Recife again, causing occurrences of landslides and several points of flooding. According to the city hall of the capital of Pernambuco, in the last 96 hours, some regions registered an accumulation of 443 millimeters.

The Civil Defense of Recife reported that the storms have so far left around 65 families homeless and 12 families homeless, according to a survey.

According to the authorities, the displaced were welcomed in community facilities organized by the entity, in the neighborhoods of Linha do Tiro, Coqueiral, Várzea and Campina do Barreto, while the displaced families are staying at the homes of friends and relatives.

The prefecture warned that residents living in risk areas look for safe places such as the homes of relatives or friends.

Since the dawn of Wednesday (25), about a thousand employees of the Civil Defense Executive Secretariat, the Urban Cleaning and Maintenance Authority (Emlurb), the Traffic and Urban Transport Authority (CTTU), the Recife Municipal Civil Guard ( GMCR), in addition to teams from the Department of Social Development who were on standby, provided various assistance to the population.
