Persecution against the Catholic Church continues in Nicaragua

In this week’s episode, Roberto Nonato and Américo Martins discuss the situation involving the Catholic Church and the government of Nicaragua. Nicaraguan Bishop Rolando Álvarez has returned to prison following the failure of negotiations between government and Church representatives over the terms of his release. Álvarez is a critic of President Daniel Ortega and was arrested last year, sentenced to 26 years in prison for treason after refusing to go into exile in the United States.

Also listen: Nonato and Américo analyze the situation in Jenin, in the West Bank, where 12 people were killed after an action by Israeli troops. Américo Martins sees a “spiral of violence in the region, with no chance for a diplomatic or negotiated solution”.

And the reporter Pedro Teixeira reports the coverage of the Mercosur Summit, in Argentina, and the discussions that block the agreement between the South American bloc and the European Union.
