The Perseverance rover in the first seconds after landing on the Red Planet “out of the corner of his eye” noticed the consequences of a technical maneuver programmed by NASA, when the “sky crane” that lowered it to the surface flew to the side and crashed nearby, so as not to damage the rover. The picture shows clouds of smoke from the defunct Sky Crane.
The image was taken by the rover’s Right Rear Hazcam engineering camera, which is used for technical needs and therefore does not have the ability to take photos in high resolution.
The smoke in the low-quality photo (one of the first that the rover sent) was noticed by space lovers, as reported in Twitter… Other enthusiasts processed the shot and even made an animation from the two available frames. NASA appreciated their efforts and posted the final version of the photo on their Facebook.
