A type of video in which a person tests which colors look best with certain types of faces has become a trend on TikTok and Instagram.
The process, called a personal color analysis, is taking the social media by storm. On TikTok, hashtags related to the subject add up to more than 1.5 billion views.
There are thousands of posts showing how each skin reacts to different tones, as well as filters that simulate how this method works.
@naticolore Analyzing a skin is never easy. She bas a neutral-warm undertone but the burnt orange didnt work. What do we do then? #coloranalysis #seasonalcoloranalysis #imageconsultant #colorconsultations
But, after all, what is a personal color analysis?
There are several techniques for interpreting personal color. One of them is the seasonal method, created by Suzanne Caygill, in 1942. She classified skin types using the four seasons of nature – spring, summer, autumn and winter – as a reference and analyzing, mainly, the temperature.
However, due to the different miscegenations, especially in Brazil, it was understood that temperature was not a relevant characteristic, thus creating the expanded seasonal method, where we arrived at 12 color charts, with characteristics such as, in addition to temperature, also intensity and depth.
Through a process that consists of ironing fabrics of different colors, tones and prints – lighter or darker, shiny or soft, cold or warm – it is possible to notice how the face, eyes and mouths react to them, in natural light.
In the videos posted on social networks, you can clearly see how a person’s skin looks more homogeneous or not as they test the colors that most favor their beauty. Cold-skinned people – more pink –, for example, harmonize with cold colors. Warm skin tones, which are more yellowish, look good with warm tones.

It is in this sense that color analysis works: repeating, close to the face (that is, only for garments on the upper part of the body and in make-up in hair and hair accessories), the pigment characteristics of skin, eyes and hair.
Main benefits of using the colors that harmonize the most
A harmonious choice of colors helps in many ways. It’s not a rule and doesn’t even need to be taken literally, but using tones that favor the skin, eyes and hair softens the texture of the skin, enhances the features, brings a healthy and rested appearance, minimizes imperfections and softens dark circles and marks of expressions.
In addition, using the colors on the chart also helps when buying clothes. It’s not about limiting or just buying the tones in your palette, but about making more assertive acquisitions that make sense for your style personal and life, visual communication objectives and needs.
The idea is, mainly, to highlight individuality, highlighting the best features, valuing harmony.
Is it possible to do the personal color analysis alone?
At first, the look of an expert, a consultant or color consultant, is essential, as this is a professional studied and trained to see the colors that most value in different beauties and discover which of the 12 cards is yours.
However, there are some tricks that can be done and that can give you a guide to use the tones that favor you the most. See which ones:
- In daylight, in front of a mirror and without makeup, try holding light or dark, hot or cold, shiny or soft clothes in front of your face and notice how stains, expression lines, dark circles and other signs react to the different shades.
- Also notice if the mouth becomes pinker or whitish, as well as the skin tone: did it become more yellowish, with a sickly appearance, or more lush, healthy?
- See also the color of the eyes. With which color did they shine more and with which tone did they appear more muted.
These are just tips that help you get an idea of whether your skin has a warm or cool undertone and harmonizes better with vibrant, opaque, deep or light colors. For a more assertive result, a personal color analysis consultant will help you.
