Peru: A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook the capital Lima

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Friday, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more, according to authorities.

The quake affected Canete and Chincha counties, south of the capital, as well as the town of Chibote, some 400 kilometers (125 miles) north of Lima.

“To keep our cool, to be vigilant for possible aftershocks,” President Pedro Castillo wrote in a Twitter message. “We are closely monitoring the situation,” he added.

The Navy ruled out the possibility of a tsunami along the Peruvian coast by the earthquake.
