Peru: Castillo’s new fall in the polls makes the election a derby

The socialist educator and trade unionist candidate for the presidency in Peru Pedro Castillo fell further in the polls yesterday, Friday, which indicates that there will be a “chest to chest” confrontation with his opponent, the leader of the populist right, Keiko Fujimori, in tomorrow’s second round of the presidential elections in the country.

In an Ipsos poll accessed by Reuters, Castillo leads with 0.9%, while the CPI poll, which was also accessed by Reuters, shows Fuchimori ahead of its rival by 0.2% for the first time in the polls.

In this highly polarized election, Fujimori, the daughter of jailed former President Alberto Fujimori, confronts Castillo, a not-so-well-known primary school teacher and union leader who ran his campaign campaign.

Polls showed Fujimori gaining ground over a margin of error against Castillo, who has been the front-runner in the first round of Peru’s presidential election in April.

The Ipsos poll has a margin of error of 2.8%, while the CPI poll has a margin of error of 2.5%.

In Peru, it is illegal to publish poll results in the last week before the presidential election, although polls can continue if local media do not publish them.
