Peru’s Congress is discussing a bill that provides the right to work leave for all those who have suffered the death of one of their pets, state news agency Andina reported.
The measure presented by deputy Rosangella Barbarán, from the Fuerza Popular party, proposes granting compensatory leave of one day of work to any worker, whether in the public or private sector, whose pet has died.
The proposal would apply to dogs and cats registered in the National Pet Registry (RNM).
To obtain this benefit, the worker must have previously informed their employer that they have pets or companion animals registered with the RNM.
The proposed leave will be granted to workers under any labor regime, and the “off” day must be compensated within a maximum period of six months.
As justification for presenting the bill, Congresswoman Barbarán mentions that pets “are considered by many to be members of the family” and, therefore, “their death can generate a significant emotional impact”.
According to a study cited in the bill, 58% of Peruvian families have at least one pet.
