Peru: Judge orders the president’s sister-in-law to be detained for 30 days

A Peruvian judge on Sunday ordered that the sister-in-law of the head of state, Pedro Castillo, be detained for 30 days as part of the pre-trial for a corruption case in which, according to the prosecution, the presidency was at the helm.

Judge Johnny Gomez Balboa handed down the sentence to Jennifer Paredes, 26, after a hearing that lasted nearly four hours. Prosecutor had requested that her pre-trial detention last 36 months.

The young woman was handed over to justice on August 10, after the unprecedented searches of the presidential palace and the head of state’s house by the police, who were looking for her.

She is suspected of participating in a corruption ring and money laundering. If convicted, she faces up to 23 years in prison.

And the Peruvian president himself faces six investigations, notably for corruption. However, these cases are separate from the one involving his sister-in-law.

Pedro Castillo, 52, a former teacher, has already faced two failed attempts by the opposition in Congress to have him impeached and impeached. In July, a poll by the Ipsos institute indicated that negative opinions about the way he exercises power have reached 74%. The president, who was elected with a party of the radical left, changed three prime ministers and seven interior ministers in little more than a year.
