The candidate of the populist right in the presidential elections in Peru, Keiko Fuchimori, hinted yesterday Saturday that she has no intention of recognizing the victory of her rival, the candidate of the radical left Pedro Castillo, if the electoral court declares him the winner of the contest on June 6.
“They say that in a few hours or days they will validate the electoral fraud and we say that we will not accept it”, said Ms. Fuchimori during a rally in Lima.
The Electoral Court (Jurado Nacional de Elecciones, JNE) is still examining the appeals filed by the candidates, most of them by the 46-year-old neoliberal candidate, before declaring the winner. The official announcement of the result may be made within the next week.
“During the last weeks we have seen so many complaints for irregularities” “Nevertheless, they’re forced to announce a result, ‘” said Ms Fuchimori, who claimed to have committed “fraud” without providing any evidence.
For their part, the Organization of American States (OECD) election observer mission, the US and the EU saw no evidence of fraud, instead calling the election process free, fair and transparent and defending the work of the Electoral Commission and the Electoral Court.
After counting 100% of the ballots, Pedro Castillo leads with 50.12% of the votes, or with a difference of about 44,000 votes. Keiko Fuchimori is limited to 49.87%. However, the result has not yet been formalized, more than a month after the second round of the presidential election.
The next president of Peru will be sworn in and will take office on July 28.
In anticipation of the announcement of the result, supporters of the two opponents have camped in Lima to “defend” their votes.
