At least six people are missing after a landslide swept away about 60 homes in the northern Peruvian city of Retama.
“Six people are currently missing, three adults and three children,” the Ministry of Health’s Crisis Management Officer, Dr. Jorge Luis Escobar.
“We estimate that 60-80 houses were damaged by the landslide. There are many trapped people,” La Libertad County Governor Manuel Leben told Canal N.
In Retamas, which is inhabited mainly by miners’ families, rescue teams have rushed and managed to free many residents.
Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has assured the government that he will help the families affected by the disaster. He noted that he had sent Defense Minister Jose Gavindia and the head of Civil Protection to the area.
