Peru MP asks president for documents amid investigation into omission

The Public Ministry of Peru has asked President Dina Boluarte or her legal defense to present, by Friday evening (17), a series of documents on her health status that led to the operation carried out between June 28 and June 9. July 2023.

The request refers to 91 standards that Boluarte would have signed within the stipulated period, as well as documents about his health status that motivated the surgical intervention, the entity indicated in a statement published on Thursday (16).

Boluarte faces a preliminary investigation by the Attorney General’s Office for crimes of omission of duties or abandonment of office, which the president rejected.

The Public Ministry claims as reasons for its investigation the failure to communicate to Congress about the temporary impediment to hold office from June 29 to July 9, 2023.

Juan Carlos Portugal, Boluarte’s lawyer, told CNN on Thursday that the custody of information about the rules is not their responsibility and explained that “the internal regulations of the Presidential Office expressly indicate that the rules and files that originate the rules that are endorsed by the President of the Republic are returned to each sector and these are the ones who have custody of them.”

Regarding the president’s medical history, the defense lawyer highlighted that it involves multiple concepts and “not just those requested by the Attorney General’s Office”, which is why he provided “selected” information related to the case.

Boluarte appeared at the Public Ministry last Monday (13) to give a statement on the matter.

After the investigation, Portugal insisted that Boluarte did not commit any omission of duties, as he was not unconscious and was never absent from his duties. He added that the president has no legal or political obligation to report this situation, as there is no legal provision that requires it.
