The Peru, battling the second wave of the young man’s pandemic coronavirus, yesterday exceeded the limit of 13,000 cases for the first time of SARS-CoV-2 in one day, according to figures announced by the Ministry of Health.
The ministry said that 13,326 cases of the new coronavirus had been confirmed in the laboratory in the previous 24 hours, a number more than 400 cases higher than the previous record, on April 1 (12,916 cases). In all, in the 13 months that Peru has been affected by the pandemic, 1,681,063 infections have been recorded.
During the same period, 337 deaths of COVID-19 patients were reported, which increased the number of pandemic victims in 56,149 dead since March 2020, according to official data. The record number of deaths in one day (384) was set on April 10th.
The second wave of the epidemic is hitting the hospital system hard. Hospitals are approaching their limits: 15,119 patients with COVID-19 are currently being treated, of which 2,603 are in intensive care units (ICU). Acute medical oxygen deficiencies are now being reported in many areas.
In Lima, the capital, 40% of patients are infected with the selected P1, the mutated strain of the new coronavirus originally identified in Brazil, Health Minister Oscar Ugarte said.
Faced with this situation, the government of caretaker President Francisco Sagasti has again imposed mandatory home restrictions on residents of Lima and 41 of Peru’s 196 provinces, mainly in the Andean region and along the Pacific coast.
The restrictive measures were imposed in March, but came for the first round of presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday.
Peruvians went to the polls despite the health crisis. In Peru, participation in elections is mandatory. The transitional authorities had also ruled out postponing the vote.
In the weeks leading up to the first round, the presidential candidates – 18 in all – staged rallies with large numbers of their supporters, sparking strong protests and criticism from doctors.
The two candidates who received the most votes, Pedro Castillo, a teacher, a candidate of the radical left, and Keiko Fuchimori, a candidate of the populist right, will face off in the second round on June 6th.
