Peru: President Dina Boluarte recalls the ambassador to Mexico

Its president PeruDina Bolluarte announced on Friday that she is recalling her country’s ambassador to Mexico because her Mexican counterpart, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, is calling her government unconstitutional.

For Mrs. Boluarte, the statements made by Mr. López Obrador violated the international principle that no country should intervene in the internal affairs of other countries.

His Foreign Ministry of Mexico did not immediately respond to Reuters news agency’s request for comment on the Peruvian head of state’s announcement.

Former Vice President Dina Bolluarte was sworn in as Peru’s new president on December 7, hours after Congress voted to remove her predecessor Pedro Castillo from office, facing charges of a “coup” for trying to dissolve parliament. Mr. Castillo was arrested and remains in custody since then. The developments triggered a political crisis, with mass mobilizations that have claimed the lives of dozens of people.

According to Ms. Boluarte, her Mexican counterpart supports Mr. Castillo’s attempt to carry out a “coup”.

“With his statements, Mr. López violates the principle of international law for non-intervention in internal affairs, as well as those concerning the defense and promotion of democracy”said the head of state during her televised address.

Earlier, Mr. López Obrador reiterated that Mexico continues to support Pedro Castillo and consider him the legitimate president of Peru, after he was “illegally” removed from office.

This week Mr. López Obrador met in Mexico with Mr. Castillo’s wife, Lilia Paredes.
