Peru: Protesters tried to occupy an airport near the border with Bolivia

Dozens of citizens demonstrating against the government on Friday attempted to occupy an airport near its border Peru with Bolivia, resulting in the Police using tear gas to disperse them.

Protesters set fire to a police vehicle outside the Inca Manco Capac airport in Juliaca of the province of Puno, according to images broadcast by Peruvian television.

Peruvian media they spoke of more than 15 injured, including two police officers. The Ministry of Health has not confirmed the tally.

Roadblocks have been reported in about 50 places in the territory. In the Ica region (south), protesters have blocked a main highway, causing traffic chaos.

During the riots that rocked Peru in December, following the ouster and arrest of former President Pedro Castillo, at least 22 people were killed and more than 600 injured.
