The 51-year-old former teacher, who was infected with the coronavirus in January, was to appear at three rallies in three different neighborhoods of the Peruvian capital yesterday.
“We inform that due to the order of the doctors, Professor Castillo must rest. “His current activities are being suspended,” the Peru Libre party’s press office also said via Twitter.
However, on the same social networking site, through an account managed by his supporters but which is not an official channel of communication of the party, it was reported that Mr. Castillo had to be “rushed to a clinic in Lima” because he had a “respiratory problem”.
Pedro Castillo returned to Lima on Thursday after a tour of northern Peru.
Earlier in the day, the radical left-wing candidate, who is said to be 12 to 20 percentage points ahead of the second round, according to opinion polls, posted a video on his Twitter account in which he appeared to be in good health.
Mr Castillo won the first round of the presidential election on April 11 with 18.92% of the vote, followed by the populist right-wing candidate Keiko Fujimori (13.40%) in a contest involving 18 candidates, a number without previous. The second round is scheduled for June 6.
