Peru reports new eruption of Ubinas volcano and organizes to evacuate population

Peruvian authorities reported, this Thursday (6), new eruptions at the Ubinas volcano, located in the region of Moquegua. The expelled ashes have already started to reach the closest communities and the government is considering emergency actions in case the situation gets worse.

The army has been organizing since the beginning of the week to distribute tents and mattresses in case an evacuation of nearby towns and villages is necessary.

On Monday, the Peruvian National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) said in a statement that the state of alert in the area had been raised from yellow to orange, according to national standards, after the volcano projected ash 1,700 meters high.

The regional government of Moquegua declared a state of emergency due to the activity of the volcano. Governor Gilia Ninfa Gutierrez said the device will allow budget modifications and activate the execution of emergency files that were prepared in record time.

“The objective of all these actions is to put the Siraguaya shelter into operation to arrange for the evacuation of the affected population and immediately order the activation of the Resettlement Committee to safeguard the lives of our fellow citizens in the sector”, he emphasized.

The governor also questioned what she calls the government’s lack of effective action. “We do not want an emergency decree on paper. We want real and concrete actions, we want effective action by national authorities, a permanent presence in the area and we want the people to be heard.”

The south of Peru, an area of ​​important mining deposits, is home to a dozen active volcanoes. Peru is also part of the so-called Pacific “Ring of Fire”, an area with a high incidence of earthquakes and volcanic activity.
