Peru to buy 55 million doses of vaccines for fourth, booster, doses

Peruvian authorities will purchase 55 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in 2022 to give a fourth injection to health care workers and the most vulnerable, the government said.

“We have agreed with various pharmaceutical companies to purchase 55 million doses of vaccines next year (…), which will allow us to give a fourth booster dose to the most vulnerable citizens and to the (health) first line staff (doctors, nurses and nurses)” , Peruvian Minister of Health Hernando Sevagios told the press.

He noted that the vaccination of the population with the fourth dose, three months after the third, will depend on the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the country.

The minister also confirmed the purchase of Pfizer vaccines and the start in January of vaccinating children between the ages of 5 and 11.

Over the last month, infections have doubled, now exceeding 1,500 a day, and deaths are now more than 50 on a daily basis.

The Latin American government has banned family reunions and Christmas and New Year celebrations, and has extended the ban from 11pm to 4am.

Peruvian authorities hope the measures will stem the spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant; it has so far recorded 71 cases, according to the health ministry.

The Peruvian government extended the state of emergency from Wednesday until January 31, which has been in force for 21 months due to the pandemic.

The Andean country with a population of 33 million has the highest mortality rate of the new coronavirus pandemic in the world: 6,122 deaths per million inhabitants, according to the French Agency, based on official figures.

Peru has counted more than 202,000 deaths from COVID-19 complications since March 2020 out of a total of more than 2 million SARS-CoV-2 infections.
