More than 20 Peruvian ports have been temporarily closed as a precautionary measure amid warnings that the volcano is causing unusually high waves, the institute said.

Peruvian police announced on Twitter that the two people were found dead by police officers near the Naylab beach.

The statement added that “the waves were unusual” in the area and that the area had been declared unsuitable for bathers.

Television footage showed many homes and businesses flooded off the coast of northern and central Peru.

The Peruvian Navy has announced that no tsunami alert has been issued for the country.

In Japan, hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated today as waves more than a meter high hit coastal areas, the state-run NHK television network reported.
